Read company results, valuation, ownership, and stock-price moves through the money a business earns and the expectations already in the price.

A good company result does not automatically produce a higher stock price. Prices react to what changed relative to expectations, including future sales, margins, cash flow, financing needs, and valuation.

Stocks

Why can a stock fall after good earnings?

Good earnings do not always mean a higher stock price. If investors expected even better numbers, weaker guidance, lower margins, or a high valuation can turn good news into a loss.

Three steps for reading a company and its stock

1. Separate the business from the stock

Revenue, profit, and cash flow describe the company, while the stock also reflects expectations, valuation, share count, and risk.

2. Compare results with expectations

Guidance, margins, estimates, and what the price already assumed often explain why apparently good news disappoints.

3. Follow cash and ownership

Review recurring earnings, free cash flow, debt, capital spending, dividends, dilution, and the rights attached to each share.

Assumptions and limits

  • A stock price reflects changing expectations and market conditions, not one reported metric.
  • Reported earnings can differ from recurring cash generation because of accounting or one-time items.
  • Explaining a price move is not a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold.
